Internships have the potential to be a win-win situation

Internships have the potential to be a win-win situation for both the student intern and the employer. However, not all internships are good situations for either party. Some basic guidelines for the employer can help: 1) Finding a specific project for the student is more challenging for the student and a better predictor for the company; 2) Challenging assignments are best; 3) Competitive wages help attract and impress talent; 4) Treat the intern like a new employee; 5) interview several candidates and use a broad internship description to increase the chances of finding a talented person.

Questions for Discussion:

1. Identify three guidelines for students regarding the selection of internships that are different than the guidelines for the employers.

2. Explain at least two reasons why a student might not be interested in an internship.

3. Explain at least two reasons why an employer might not be interested in hiring a student intern for a summer project.
