Discussion Question 1 -- Compensation

Important topics for compensation include:

  • The Nature of Compensation
  • Compensation Systems Design Issues (Legal requirements and economic conditions)
  • Perceptions of Pay Fairness
  • Development of a Base Pay System
  • Issues Involving Pay Increases and Pay Structures

What does compensation mean to an employee? Are there psychological components to compensation? Is compensation only about money?  What is the effect of satisfied employees on a company’s bottom line? Use at least one citation/referenced to your readings.

 Discussion Question 2 - Benefits

Why do employers provide employee benefits, rather than providing all compensation in the form of pay and letting employees buy the services they want? Of the benefits discussed in chapter 7, list the ones you consider essential- that is, the benefits you would require in any job offer. Why are these benefits important to you?   What is an important benefit to you -- other than health insurance and annual/sick leave?  As an HR person, benefits, compensation, and rewards are very important for employee hiring, retention, and motivation. You do not need to use citations/references for this discussion question.

Discussion Question 3 – Retention

Describe the components of a retention.  Describe some direct and indirect reasons an employee might leave an organization.  Why would employees become dissatisfied with their work?  Link the dissatisfaction of work to a theory identified in the textbook.  Use citations/references back to the textbook.

Discussion Question 4 – Connections

In Week 3, we discussed the hiring process—recruitment and selection.  This week we are discussing compensation and benefits.  How do you think the hiring process (recruitment and selection), compensation and benefits impact retention and motivation?  To answer this question, you need to critically think about the connections and the interrelationships between all the HR process discussed.  You do not need to have citations/references for this discussion question.
