NEGOTIATION SKILLS

 

Main Question: Tell me about a time when you needed to influence a set of stakeholders with different agenda?

 

This question is necessary since this will show if the interviewee has the skill of influencing various individuals or entities with different interests.  Asking this question would give the interviewer the assurance that the interviewee has a certain knack for negotiation skills, depending on the answer the interviewee will provide.

 

The answer the interviewee will provide will show if the interviewee has a background and knowledge to back up that he/she has potential negotiation skills.  Basing on the answer, this would measure up the negotiation skills of the applicant.

 

 

Follow-up Question:  How did you achieve or do it?

 

The said question will provide the interviewer with a more in-depth information as to how the interviewee conducts this kind of skills. 

 

The answers that the interviewee will give will measure if the negotiation and communication skills he/she manifested given the situation is really the factor to which the said influence was achieved, or otherwise.  It will also provide the interviewer the opportunity to look at amount of negotiating the applicant used and if he/she did so with or without the aid of other people.

 

Follow-up Question: Did you have an experience in the past wherein you were assigned to negotiate with individuals or entities and failed to get their approval?  What happened?

 

This question will be useful in obtaining the limitations of the applicant in terms of his/her negotiation skills

 

The applicant’s answer to this would provide a measure as to the extent of his/her negotiation skills

 

 

 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL AWARENESS

 

Main Question: Give me an example of a situation when knowledge of your organization's vision, goals, values helped you make a decision or achieve a particular output for your organization.

 

The answer of the interviewee to the question will not only provide the interviewer the knowledge whether the applicant is knowledgeable of his/her organization’s culture, but will also show if the interviewee has an in-depth understanding of such which transpires to his/her practical knowledge which allowed him/her to utilize it in the actual work performance

 

The answer of the interviewer to this question would allow the interviewer to perceive if the applicant is capable of knowing and understanding her organization’s culture and putting them into actual work situations.

 

Follow-up Question:  How were you able to assess the effect in that particular situation?

 

The question would provide a detailed answer of the situation given by the interviewee as an answer to the main question.  The details given will provide information which would validate whether the interviewee indeed has organizational awareness and was able to utilize such in actual work situations.

 

The answer would provide validation whether the applicant is capable of acquiring organizational awareness in her new work environment and if she will be able to utilize it in her new work situation.

·   Claimed that he/she was able to experience such influence but wasn’t able to point out specifically what it is

Why?

The answer is ideal since it showed that the applicant has a wide variety of situations where she was able to influence a number of varied stakeholders and it was clearly explained by him/her which shows breadth and depth of the competency

The answer is not ideal since it just shows fewer situations where the applicant was able to influence stakeholders, but it is considered acceptable since it shows that he/she has showcased negotiation skills, albeit limited and shows promising negotiation performance in the future

The answer is poor since it provides no clear justification that the applicant was able to showcase his/her negotiation skill in the past and made no emphasis on development of such competency

Follow-up Question:  How did you achieve or do it?

 

 

·   Gave comprehensive, on point, and clear explanations of various ways and means he was able to achieve influencing stakeholders

·      Gave explanation which is understandable, some pointers on the ways and means but lesser than what is considered to be ideal

The answer is not ideal since it just gives fewer pointers and the quality of explanation is something which is just understandable but not on point and clear, however, it is acceptable since it still justifies the claim of the applicant on the main question

·   Gave a justification which is considered acceptable but not as strongly acceptable as the ideal answer

·     Identified 2 or more instances wherein the applicant failed

·     Wasn’t able to provide an acceptable justification for the failures

·     Did not give emphasis on the learnings of the experience

Why?

The answer shows a realistic scenario where even the most ideal worker has failures, but was able to clearly justify why he/she failed, and also showed the willingness of the applicant to learn from failures and use it in the future endeavors

The answer is acceptable since it still shows that the applicant has failures but was able to use it for his/her development, although it is not ideal since it provided more scenarios of failure which could mean that the applicant is more prone to failing

The answer is poor since it was not able to justify why he/she failed and did not show any indication of the applicant’s learnings on the failure

The answer is ideal since it clearly showcases the applicant’s awareness of the organization’s culture and his knowledge on how to utilize it for decision making.  The clear and comprehensive explanation shows that he was well-involved with the situation he addressed and showed that it was really experienced

The answer is acceptable since it shows that the applicant has organizational awareness although it is not as ideal if he/she fails to establish connection between the awareness and its effect to his decision and the output for the organization

The answer is poor since it shows that the applicant has not showcased organizational awareness in the past

Follow-up Question:  How were you able to assess the effect in that particular situation?
