As you are probably aware, we have a wonderful program

Dear Mr. Castle:

As you are probably aware, we have a wonderful program for students highlighting career opportunities for women in the 21st Century. Last week I had the opportunity to make a presentation about our program to all of the principals in your school district.

The presentation went well and I thought the principals were genuinely interested in its possibilities. However, I could not help but notice that approximately three-quarters of your administrators are men. I was very surprised at this. The majority of your teachers are female but this is not the case with the administrators. This gives the impression of a glass ceiling effect.

Would you share with me the demographics of your district’s professional staff? In addition, I would be interested in knowing what the district is doing to address the apparent underrepresentation of women in the administrative ranks.

Sincerely,

Jackie Johnson

Response

Answer the following questions,

1. Describe the glass ceiling effect and how it reflects this scenario.

2. Draft a written response to Ms. Johnson, addressing her concerns.

3. Compare the demographics in this situation with the demographics in your school / district. Does your district’s administrative profile indicate a glass ceiling effect?
