how you would react to the situation

#1 Read the situation below and then write how you would react to the situation if you were using each of the common reactions to conflict.

Joe Hunter has been with the San Angeles Police Department for the past 6 years. After graduating second in his class at the state police academy, Hunter was hired as a patrol person with San Angeles. He quickly moved up in the ranks to corporal in his second year and sergeant in his fourth. All of the officers consider Hunter to be the best cop on the force because of his high level of intelligence as well as his uncanny ability to work with the public by anticipating problems in the community.

Everything was going along well for Sergeant Hunter until the spring of 1988. During this time, he started dating a girl that he quickly fell in love with. What he didn’t know until 5 months after they began dating was that she had once been engaged to his captain.

When Hunter’s captain discovered the relationship, he was furious with Hunter, but knew that legally he could not control the private life of his employee. However, even though he could not directly tell Hunter what to do, he decided to make his life miserable at work. Captain Webb constantly gave Hunter the worst assignments, kept him away from the public contact that made him such a good officer, and started to lower Hunter’s performance evaluations.

Hunter was frustrated, then hurt, and finally angry. He finally reached a point where one day he was so angry, that he had to do something. If Hunter were to apply each of the common reactions to conflict in this situation, what would he do in each case? Which one would be the most appropriate?

Please address each of these reactions to conflict in your discussion of the above situation. Don’t forget to discuss which of these reactions you think would be most effective in this situation and why.

  • Withdrawal
  • Accommodation
  • Win at all costs
  • Collaboration
  • Third party intervention.

#2 respond to this

The following are the conflict techniques for solving the problem that arises among the members in the organization:

Withdrawal: Withdrawing which means on avoiding the conflicts in situation like not able to handle the conflicts, when less chance on concerns, when the situation does not worth on the problem etc.

Accommodation: The accommodating strategy essentially entails giving the opposing side of the wants for providing peace on the minor issues that happens in the organization.

Win at all costs: The win-win approach sees conflict resolution as an opportunity to come to a mutually beneficial result. The winning is the main goal in the conflict which is essentially taking another approach but it damages the relationship among the members.

Collaboration: The collaboration helps in finding a creative solution for the problem and that is accepted by both the parties.

Third party intervention: The third party interventions are the mediation and the arbitration where they help on resolving the conflicts among the members by knowing on the problems on both the side and judging according to the situations.

The most effective reaction for the situation:

I think the most effective reaction for solving the conflict in this case is Collaboration and the reason is given below.

1. Both side open discussion between Hunter and his captain in turn which benefit both on satisfaction towards their conflict.

2. The collaborating style is an excellent way to merge insights from people with different perspectives on a problem, so that Hunter can discuss his personal life in a different perspective way as which should not effect on the work. So, it is easily understandable of the Captain on knowing the difference of the official and personal life.

3. The emotions and the close attention help both of them for a better solution.

4. Collaboration helps in solving the personal conflicts and attends to the situation in the least confrontational manner of any conflict, so that Captain and Hunter personal conflicts can be solved.

#3 respond to this

In this case there is an Interpersonal conflict between Joe who is known for being one of the best officers in the department and Captain Webb. Captain Webb is angry that Joe is dating his ex. Joe is suffering because of this, however he has a couple of possible solutions. He could withdraw from his current department and transfer to a region out of Captain Webbs control. In this case Joe would possible have to move or rebuild his reputation which could be costly. Another option would be Accommodation. This would most likely not work out in the end due to lower job moral and bad evaluations. The next option is the win at all cost. This option maybe successful, but a huge risk is involved with rising up against your superior. He would need plenty of proof that personal conflict was affecting work. Backing down from win at all cost may difficult (Aamodt, 2015, p.235). Collaboration is another possible alternative where a solution would be found to make each party happy. I’m not sure if this could work in this scenario because even if Joe stopped dating the girl Webb may continue to hold a grudge and not allow Joe to shine. If this was the case no one would be happy. The last option is a third party intervention. They most likely share a close friend in the police force that could try to reason with Webb and Joe to solve their issues. If I were placed in Joe’s shoes I would try to go the route of a third party intervention to try to solve the issue. I may even go to his boss to explain the situation I am in, even though that could leads to Webb becoming angrier. Lastly I may Withdraw and leave for another branch I could once again do well in. This is a tough situation Joe is in but following these routes could help him solve his conflict
