CASE STUDY -- The Recruiting Game At L’Oreal

What does playing games have to do with getting a job at L’Oréal? Everything. Group L’Oréal has designed a number of different games for the purpose of recruiting marketing students.  The company believes that this approach to recruiting gives it an edge in fast-growing and emerging markets. Students play the games online.  A computer tracks students’ decisions and awards points to them as they work to increase the market value of a simulated company. Winners of local contests travel to Paris to participate in the finals competition. Winners receive job offers from L’Oréal executives who have seen how they perform under pressure. Participants come from all over the world, from countries as diverse as Indonesia and Brazil.

The games are e-Strat, a business simulation; Brandstorm, a game for turning ideas into products; and Ingenius, an industrial strategy game.  The most popular of the three games is e-Strat.  In this simulation, students make decisions about retail strategy and spending on R&D.  The games attract more than 50,000 students per year, and the company has provided scholarships and endowed chairs to about 200 universities worldwide.  Undoubtedly, the biggest winner in the competition is L’Oréal because of the publicity the games provide to the company and the opportunity to hire top marketing students worldwide.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1.  Visit L’Oréal’s Web site (http://www.reveal-thegame.com/usa/) and review the information about each of the games.

2.  Critique the use of these games as a recruiting strategy. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Are there any ethical problems with this approach? Any EEO issues? Besides the opportunity to get a job with the company, why do you think the games have worldwide appeal?

 3.  Discuss whether you would participate in an activity such as this approach in order to get a job with a company.

Please complete the L'Oreal case study found under the weekly checklist. Remember that your responses to each question should be substantive -- a simple "yes" or "no" will not suffice. You need to have solid paragraphs and explain your rationale. Your answers should be a minimum of  paragraph in length with each paragraph having 3 – 4 substantive sentences. Please be sure to properly cite any sources used
