Realistic Job Previews at Sheetz

Sheetz is one of the fastest growing family- and employee-owned convenience stores in the United States, with over $4 billion in sales, over 399 locations across six states, and over 13,000 employees. After experiencing an average 49 percent turnover at its stores, it wanted to improve its recruiting and retention practices to reduce attrition by creating a more effective recruiting process. To give applicants a better understanding of the job requirements, personal appearance expectations, and pre employment screening processes, it decided to develop an interactive web-based realistic job preview to help potential applicants assess if the job is right for them before applying. Sheetz hopes that poor fits will self-select out of the hiring process before even applying. The realistic job preview reduced turnover 2 percent in the first year, saving $350,000 in manager time. The company expects the realistic job preview video to help it continue to hire effectively as it pursues a 10 percent growth rate.
