Samantha, who works for an educational curriculum company, was asked to test a new reading program called E-Z read. She asked the principal of Desert Elementary School for permission to access two classrooms, where she could test the program. Students were randomly assigned to both classrooms. Miss Jones's class was asked to use E-Z read program for one semester, and Mrs. Brown's class was asked to continue using their regular reading program. At the end of the semester both classes took a test to assess their reading skills. Students' grades were compared to see if implementing E-Z read program improved reading skills.Â
Re-write the scenario above with changes you would make to the study in order to create a true research study?
SY 255: Personality Psychology
Research Methods Worksheet
Details:
To reflect on what you have learned in topic 1 about research methods, please read the below scenario and answer all questions below. While APA
style is not required, solid academic writing is expected.
Type your responses directly onto the worksheet.
Lecture 1 and chapter 2 of your book discuss research methodology of psychology. Make sure to inlcude in-text citations for the lecture and/or the
textbook when completing your justifications; citations must be presented in APA format.
Scenario:
Samantha, who works for an educational curriculum company, was asked to test a new reading program called E-Z read. She asked the principal of
Desert Elementary School for permission to access two classrooms, where she could test the program. Students were randomly assigned to both
classrooms. Miss Jones’s class was asked to use E-Z read program for one semester, and Mrs. Brown’s class was asked to continue using their regular
reading program. At the end of the semester both classes took a test to assess their reading skills. Students’ grades were compared to see if
implementing E-Z read program improved reading skills. Question Answer Justifications (how did you come up with your
answer?) What is a possible hypothesis for this
study? The possible hypothesis for the study is the student’s
grades will be improved based on the E-z read program. Whose class is a control group and
why? Whose class is an experimental group
and why? What are the independent and
dependent variables in this study? Mrs. Brown class will be the control group. This
class did not receive a new reading program
which was helpful to compare results with Miss
Jones class that did received treatment.
Miss Jones class was the experimental group
since the E-z reading program was implemented
in their class room.
The dependent variables in the study will the
children in Miss jones class that will use the E-z
ready program for one semester. The hypothesis is a testable theory that will
research how the E-z read program impacts
students reading skills. The control group must be the reliable
date that research can compare to
conclude their experiment . The experimental can be characterized
as the group that receives different
variables in the experiment.
The dependent variable is the outcome
variable. The children need to use the
E-z read program in the class to Why is it important that students are
randomly assigned to both groups? The independent variable in the study will be the
children in Mrs. Brown’s class that are utilizing
the regular reading program. retrieve results.
The independent variable stands alone
and the different variable in the
experiment can change the
independent variable. The reason students are randomly assigned to
both groups to manipulate the subjects. An each
participate have an equal chance with being in a
group. Why would a correlational and case
study not be appropriate for this type of
study?
In the scenario described above, do we
want to see a statistically significant
difference in the two groups’ test
scores? Why or why not?
Re-write the scenario above with changes you would make to the study in order to create a true research study?
