These behaviors usually have the intent to protect oneself.

1- To add, self-handicapping is when people sabotage their chances for success by creating roadblocks that will inhibit success.  These behaviors usually have the intent to protect oneself.  If one is afraid of obtaining a poor score on the GRE, they may stay up late the night before instead of studying.  This is so they can tell themselves that staying up late is why they did poorly, as opposed to suffering a blow to their ego.  The locus of control is external, as opposed to being attributable to one’s own abilities or talents (Myers, 2013).

Class, according to the text, why does self-presentation differ in familiar vs. unfamiliar contexts?

2- Our text makes the observation that in our relationship to others, the most influential thing in liking someone early on in a relationship is physical attractiveness. Would you agree? Why, or why not? At what point does proximity alter the condition of liking? Do you see this happening in the work place?
