Two employees are considered for promotion to sr. vice president

Two employees are considered for promotion to sr. vice president. The employee that is chosen for the promotion has an excellent performance record but has false credentials on her resume. The employer finds after he promotes her that out that the employee lied about having a masters degree. The minimum qualification for the position is to have a masters degree. Can the employee who did not get the promotion sue the employer of grounds of negligent hiring or negligent retention?
