Conflict Resolution Psychology

Conflict Resolution Psychology

Watch the video clip below from the movie, Mrs. Doubtfire. Discuss below with others in your group the TRIP goals of each of the two characters. After discussion, form a consensus and determine those goals (topic, relationship, identity and process). Once reaching a consensus answer, write down your answer in a final post.

Pleas answer question addressing the goals of each character Miranda Hillard and Daniel Hillard

Trip Model

T - Topic

R - Relationship

I - Identity

P- Process

Topic

-incompatible goals, people want two different things or people ( conflict over new plant or not) want the same thing (labor and managment dispute over wages:

-allocation of resources ie divorce parents constructing visitation rights

-involves issues of fact, value and policy

-can be listed, argued, evidence, analyzed into pros and cons

-are objective, external to us

-easiest type of goal to identify and communicate

Relationship

Concerned with:

-how parties treat each other

-amount of interdependence of parties

-amount of influence on other party

-amount of power over other party

-leads to high level of disagreement

-seldom openly expressed

-reactive, result in spirals, attributions to other party

Identity

need to maintian, protect, repari self-esteem and social-esteem

Four types of messages:

1. Save Selfs Face

-resist perceived unjust intimidation (thats not fair)

-refuse to step back from position, though position unatainable

-refuse to admit conflict exists (he'll get over it)

-major priority in asian cultures

2. Save others face

-help other increase self-esteem

-avoid giving directive

-listen carefully, show concern

-ask question insted of attacking

3. damage self face

-ie "i'm crazy", "i'm lousy"

4. damage others face

-humiliate, embarress, exclude, demean, other low-power/unimportant

Process

-parties disagree how to formally/informally conduct conflict

1. degree of emotional expression

2. organized discussion vs. free -flow

3. decision by consensus vs voting

What to consider when breaking down trip goals

1. not all types emegre in disputes

2. goals have variable degrees of improtance

3. goals inter-related

4. identity & relational goals are drivers of disputes (identity/relational issues most difficult to talk, but most potent issue in conflict)

5. content-only solutions rarely satisfy all parties in serious disputes

6. conflict parties often specialze in one kind of goal

7. goals emerge in different forms (open and/or hidden)

8. goals vary between people
