For this discussion I have decided to evaluate Perdue Farms’ advertising. Perdue Farms operates in a capitalist economic systems in which the government maintains regulatory controls. Being is a capitalist economy businesses are always looking for ways in which they can give themselves an edge. The agricultural industry is no different. Perdue Farms’ was able to find that edge by transitioning their operations to a factory farming one. Here they raise poultry that have been bred for increased meat production to their breasts and are able to convert feed into muscle/protein at an extremely high rate. In doing so the animals are raised in conditions may be increasing their suffering, cramped tight spaces, no fresh air, and no sunlight. Perdue Farms’ products are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and the US Department of Agriculture but its advertising is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. One of the primary laws that govern this industry is the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. This act enable the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service to inspect slaughter houses and requires the proper treatment and humane handling of all food animals with one major exception. According to the USDA it does not apply to poultry.
Advertising is a major part of a capitalist economy. It encourages competition between different companies in such a manner that it can benefit the economy and the consumer. According to Barnes, “advertising is generally credited with having played a strategic part in building national markets for a verity of consumer goods, thereby providing the foundation for the development of large-scale production and mass distribution.” (1962) When producers are advertising their products they need to be certain that they are not using deceptive advertising techniques not just being it is illegal and immoral but they can also lose the trust of their customers. The ethical theory that I will apply here is deontology also called Duty Theory. Duty theory is the idea that our standards come from our instinctual obligations, such as being honest and truthful. (Fieser, 2015) When it comes to advertising honesty is important because this is how you can build brand loyalty. While Perdue Farms’ is not technically lying about the way its chickens in its advertisements it is being misleading. The packaging that the chicken come says that they are raised cage free. That is true they raised in a large warehouse with hundreds is not thousands of other chickens with little space to move and little fresh air. This is an example of how they are being misleading in their advertisements.
