lack of environmental responsibility

Please help me prepare a 200 word response to fellow student post in bold print below.

Need you to incorporate quotes from the attached resources in the reply and make the response simple and easy to understand.

Here are the instructions for responding:

  • Each of your replies should be at least 200 words and informed by the course material. As such, the replies must have citations and references in APA notation. Your list of references for each reply should include all of the course material that has informed your reply, in addition to any research that you have obtained on your own.
  • Your replies should focus on the specific examination presented by your fellow student, and these should include an examination of whether or not the characteristics of the ethical theory and/or economic system were identified well, and whether or not their application and analysis was also carried out successfully. Providing such an examination is not an attack on your fellow student but an attempt to work together with your fellow student toward the better understanding of the ethical theories employed, as well as their application.

(JEREMIA) Perdue Farms and the lack of environmental responsibility

Perdue Farms is one of the largest chicken operations in the United States. The way they force their contractors to raise the birds presents a significant environmental hazard. Thousands of chickens raised in small containment areas produce thousands of pounds of waste a year. Sometimes this manure can stack up for years before being disposed of (Compassion USA, 2014). The problem arises because there is almost a complete lack of regulations governing the concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) operations. They operate almost entirely on a free market system that relies on the corporations to decide what is ethically responsible. CAFOs are regulated under the clean water act and must meet natural resource conservation service guidelines limiting the amount of waste that reaches covered water ways. (USDA, N.D.).

The largest issue is the lack of regulation, standards, and enforcement regarding the air pollutants emitted by CAFOs. The USDA and the EPA do not even have good data on how many CAFO farms there are, let alone how many animals are at each farm. Traditionally farming has avoided a lot of the governmental regulations because they were small family run farms. Today there is no reason large corporate farms should be able to operate free from regulations we would impose on other industries of that size.  A government accountability report sent to congress outlined the need for better monitoring and regulations, but no actions have been taken. Animal waste is known to produce air born pollutants that have a harmful effect on humans and the environment.   For example, hydrogen sulfide H2S is a natural byproduct of decomposing waste (Carman, 2009). The occupational safety and health administration describes H2S as a colorless, flammable, extremely hazardous gas that even at low levels can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory system.  At high levels, it is fatal (N.D.). In 2007 5 people, including two children, died because of high levels of H2S. Bringing CAFOs under the regulations of the Clean Air Act would require them to take reasonable measures to limit air pollutants, and operate in a safe manner. If a CAFO was outside compliance they would either have to reduce the amount of animals producing waste or invest in more equipment to limit air pollutants. At a minimum the EPA and USDA need to invest in reliable data collection to evaluate the hazardous effects of airborne pollutants, and reasonable mitigation procedures. It is impossible to take corrective action on a problem if we can’t identify it.
