On Ned's 18th birthday his aunt promised in writing to pay him $1,000.00

On Ned's 18th birthday his aunt promised in writing to pay him $1,000.00 on his 21st birthday if he would avoid alcoholic beverages for the next three years. Ned, perfectly sober, agreed to abstain and was successful in keeping his promise. Ned's aunt refused to pay on Ned's 21st birthday claiming Ned benefited himself by refraining from drinking alcoholic beverages for the three years.

1. If Ned sues his aunt, would Ned win? Yes or no and why.  Address the benefit/detriment issues from a legal perspective.
