value nonhuman animals for their own sake

One important concern is being able to value nonhuman animals for their own sake and not from any attempts to anthropomorphize them. The idea that nonhumans are worthy of consideration only inasmuch as their traits and qualities resemble ones of humans reduces their value to what is relevant to humans. Why is this antithetical to environmental ethics?
