Abstract

Acculturation refers to a dual process of psychological and cultural change that follows intercultural contact. Psychological changes include alterations in individuals toward the acculturation process, their cultural identities, and social behavior. Cultural changes include alterations in group customs towards economic and political life. These processes of psychological and cultural change may contribute acculturation styles to relate with mental health disorders. The purpose of the study is to predict whether there is a relationship/association between acculturation styles and mental health disorders of immigrants. A non-directional, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be conducted with four levels in the independent variable: assimilation, integration, marginalization, and segregation. A correlational design (longitudinal study), with a total of 100 patients, from August 2017 to December 2017, with different ethnic background from an outpatient consultation service will be investigated by the Hannover Migration and Mental Health Interview (HMMH, see Calliess et al., 2009). The developmental process will be divided into three age groups: 1) below or equal to 30 years; 31–50 years, and above 50 years. The study may be used to show the immigrants that acculturation is not just a migration procedure, but also a challenge involved in the process of and individual exchange, leading to mental health disorders.
