Applications of Ability and Standardized Testing As discussed in Chapter 12 of the textbook, standardized ability tests "are available for just about any purpose. There appears to be no end to the construction of this type of test. Relative ease in scoring and administration gives group ability tests a major advantage over similar individual tests" (Kaplan & Saccuzzo, 2013, p. 339).  In addition, the ability to compare the scores of one test-taker (or group of test-takers) with that of another mean that standardized tests are becoming more and more popular as a means of gauging achievement progress of a target group. Due to the ease of administration/scoring and the ability to compare results, standardized tests (such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, or LSAT) are often used to determine admission to institutions of higher education or as a criteria for scholarship selection. Proponents of standardized testing believe that these forms of tests are essential in providing a basis for comparison across applicants and a standard by which all must meet. On the other hand, there are many researchers who argue that standardized tests are culturally biased, unfair and should not utilized for any type of high-stakes decision.
