End of life issues and questions of quality of life.
Chapter 19 touches upon many emotionally charged issues, as the topics of Death and Dying are not easy to discuss. In keeping with this theme please read the scenario below and answer the ethically challenging questions for this week's Discussion Board Post.
Penelope is 83 years old. She no longer has capacity to make decisions for herself because she has advanced Alzheimer's disease. While competent she wrote an Advance Directive saying that if she developed Alzheimer's she would like to be euthanized (mercy-killing) and has refused to consent to any medical treatment if she becomes ill.
In her care facility she recently developed a chest infection. You are Penelope's Doctor and have decided to give her pain relief medication in order to relieve her pain and to make her comfortable, but you also know this will hasten her death. You've also decided not to give her any medication to deal with the chest infection. Penelope's daughter, Betty, asks you to give Penelope an injection which will kill her immediately.
Assuming that Doctor Assisted Suicide is now legal, would you do it? Would you comply with Penelope and Betty's wishes?
