It can be awkward and confusing to be out of one's own culture or to interpret the behavior of a person from another culture. In such situations, feelings of acculturation stress or even ostracism are not uncommon. This writing exercise will help you achieve a deeper understanding of ostracism. After reading about the idea of the cultural mainstream, think about a time you felt ostracized, a time you yourself were outside of the mainstream (e.g., not being invited to a party, having a poor complexion, being chosen last for a team sport). Then write a journal/diary entry that reflects on an experience of ostracism—from your own perspective. Even though you are writing this is diary format, please be sure to still include an MLA heading.
