Jason is a 14-year-old male who has been referred to a psychologist for a violence risk assessment after being expelled from school as a result of a violent altercation. The index incident involved a physical fight with another student in the school hallway. After one teacher attempted unsuccessfully to stop the fight, four additional staff members were required to restrain Jason, who was reported to be extremely belligerent and resistant. Jason was arrested and convicted of assault and sentenced to 6 months probation. Jason has a history of previous violence having a prior assault conviction and being suspended from school for fighting on three occasions. His first suspension occurred when he was in grade 4. Jason reported that he has started 6 serious fights in the past 3 years and enjoys the “rush” he gets from fighting. Jason described having a couple of close friends who he plays sports with. He stated most of these friends do not engage in criminal activities. He described himself as liking sports and has been involved in a community basketball league for 1 year. Jason started drinking at the age of 13 and admitted to frequently getting drunk. He denies any drug use. His academic performance is generally poor.
