Yun Tung Chow tried to unclog a floor drain in the kitchen of therestaurant where he worked. He used a drain cleaner called Lewis Red Devil Lye thatcontained crystalline sodium hydroxide. The product label said to wear eye protection, toput one tablespoon of lye directly into the drain, and to keep your face away from thedrain because there could be dangerous backsplash. Not wearing eye protection, Chowmixed three spoonfuls of lye in acan and poured that mixture down the drain whilebending over it. Liquid splashed back into his face, causing injury. He sued for productliability based on inadequate warnings and a design defect. The trial court grantedsummary judgment to the manufacturer. Chow appealed.
