Doing a Little Sociological Theory:

Doing a Little Sociological Theory:

For the following section, I will provide a few topics and your job is to try to analyze BOTH topics using at least 2 of the 3 main sociological theories covered in the Soc. Theory PPT show as well as your textbook.

For example: Tattoo Culture

How would a Symbolic Interactionist, Functionalist, or Conflict Theorist analyze tattoo culture?

Symbolic Interactionist: Tattoos, often works of art in themselves, symbolize signs of fashion and social status within an emerging, evolving culture. The meaning behind having a tattoo has changed dramatically and no longer simply implies you have been in jail or the military.

Functionalist: There has always been an erotic function in the act of tattooing and in the signification of the tattoo. As the artist inscribes decorative words and images on the human body, there is a complicated, tactile relationship between artists and tattoo subjects - one that involves fear, trust and sometimes a sexual charge. Tattoos serve the function of empowering individuals to express themselves.

Conflict Theorist: Tattoos are signs that mark a boundary between the dominant culture and the culture of those who are oppressed by the dominant culture. Like graffiti, tattoos are representative of a revolutionary kind of dissatisfation with mainstream values.

* (you only need to analyze each using 2 of the 3 theories)

** (refer to the Sociological Theory Table I posted in section 1 as a resource to help you)
