Hi Tina. I was reading over your questions and I would like to answer the one concerning SIDS. You asked, “Are there ways to help lower the chances of SIDS?” When we bring a newborn baby into this world, we tend to worry about everything regarding the health and development of our children. “SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Occurs when an infant stops breathing while sleeping” (“Lifespan 360 Christian Perspectives on Human Development,” 2017, p. 100). This topic touches a special place in my heart for a few reasons. Before I had my two beautiful children, I worked a Crime Scene Investigator for many years. Sadly, throughout my years of being a CSI, I had to investigate a number infant deaths caused by (SIDS). Most of the cases I worked, the baby was completely healthy and developing properly. However, after the parent would lay their child down to sleep, hours would go by, the parents would check on their child realizing most unfortunate circumstances has happen. “Over the past several decades, researchers have struggled with understanding the cause of this devastating phenomenon (“Lifespan 360 Christian Perspectives on Human Development,” 2017, p. 100). This was a pretty big worry of mine as I personally became a new mother. There aren’t any ways to prevent (SIDS), but there are ways to lower the chances of it happening. “One of the primary ways in which researches have battled this baffling phenomenon is by consistently encouraging caregivers to place infants on their backs when they are sleeping and to be sure that the sleeping environment is free of blankets, toys, and pillows (“Lifespan 360 Christian Perspectives on Human Development,” 2017, p. 100). Because of what I have experienced in my life, I personally went one step further and purchased a special baby monitor what would keep track my child’s heartbeat and breathing. If the monitor does not detect the heartbeat or my child breathing the alarm would go off. I understand this does not prevent (SIDS), but it did put my heart at ease a little more when I laid my child down to go to sleep. Lifespan 360 Christian Perspectives on Human Development . (2017).
