Chapter 13 of Salkind's Statistics (reference below) the assigned readings introduces the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA); first, compare and contrast the one-way ANOVA with the independent t-test in regard to the interpretation of t vs F and also explain when an ANOVA would be more appropriate than a t-test.
Also: an ANOVA is sometimes called an “omnibus test”, meaning that it indicates whether there is a statistically significant difference between (at least two of) the means for the groups, but assuming you have more than two groups (e.g., comparison of effect of placebo vs. .5 mg of Xanax; vs. 1.0 mg of Xanax vs. 1.5 mg of Xanax on levels of state-anxiety), what can it NOT tell you?
