Taste and smell are known to be intertwined.

Taste and smell are known to be intertwined.

Taste is proximal but smell is a distal sense, just as touch is proximal whereas sight is distal.

Please explain what this means.  What does it mean that taste is proximal?  What does it mean to say that smell is distal? Please give a thorough answer.
