Course Activity Writing a Procedural Text

Course Activity Writing a Procedural Text
This Course Activity will help you meet these educational goals:
You will analyze the clarity of a procedural text and offer recommendations to improve it.
You will then write a procedural text that is organized accurately and formatted in a
reader-friendly manner. Introduction
A procedural text gives an explanation of how to do or make something. Recipes, game
rules, scientific experiments, and how-to books are organized by process. Read through
this writing resource, which includes tips and guidelines for writing a procedural text in
the context of Internet technology. Many of these tips and guidelines can be applied to
procedural texts of all varieties.
__________________________________________________________________________ Directions and Analysis
Task 1: Analyzing a Procedural Text
Consider this procedural text:
Before you inflate your car's tires with air, you will need to know the
recommended pressure for your tires. To find out this information, consult the
owner's manual for your car. Then connect a tire gauge on the valve stem of
each tire to check the air pressure. After you turn on the air pump, attach the
pump hose to the valve stem of each tire to allow air to flow inside. Depending on
the type of pump, you will more than likely need to squeeze a trigger on the hose
to release the air. Periodically check the pressure on each tire after filling with a
small amount of air to ensure that you aren't putting too much air in your tire.
Doing so could damage your tire. If there is too much air in a tire, squeeze the
button on the valve stem to release the excess air until your tires are inflated at
the correct pressure.
a. Briefly describe the subject of this procedural text. If someone follows this
procedure, what will he or she accomplish?
Type your response here: b. Making use of the tips and guidelines you explored earlier, describe at least five
ways that this procedural text could be improved. Consider changes in formatting
and organization as well as changes to the text itself.

Think of a sport or a game that you like to play. Choose one task involved in this game,
and consider the steps that are needed to carry it out successfully. Make sure the task
you choose involves multiple steps and that a single procedure can be used to succeed.
(Note: It is OK if more than one procedure can produce success.)
In basketball, for example, you might choose the steps involved in shooting and making
a free throw. In football, you might choose the steps involved in preparing your
equipment for a game. Alternatively, you could choose completing a turn in a complex
board game or defeating an enemy in a video game.
a. Describe the task you have selected. When a person has successfully completed
this task, what is the result? What defines failure? If a person tries but fails to
complete the task, can his or her failure be traced to a single mistake or is chance a
factor?
Type your response here: b. Develop a procedural text that describes how to successfully carry out the task you
have selected. Remember to include formatting or images if appropriate. Also take
into account the tips and guidelines for writing a procedural text that you have
already investigated.
