ENGL 333 RESEARCH PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
The Research Paper is a demonstration of your ability to integrate information from at least 10
sources, explain that information with many grammatical examples, and then conclude with a
summary and implications for future work, all relating to grammar.
Paper Requirements: Current MLA format; 12-point Times New Roman font.
At least 10 pages (no maximum limit).
At least 10 scholarly sources (not Wikipedia). Each source listed in “Works Cited” must
be cited within the paper, and each source cited within the paper must be listed in “Works
Cited.”
Concerns all of the following:
o Section One: The grammar of a text of your choosing*, which includes
explanations of its structures (forms and functions) and/or errors,
o Section Two: Research on common grammatical errors in English speaking and
writing.
All should be copiously illustrated with grammar examples. Show that you’ve mastered
course content, with specific grammar terms from the textbook.
*This can be an essay, story or poem. Structure: Introduction: what to be presented, with general background information concerning the
topics.
Body: presentation of the topics, with copious grammar examples.
Conclusion: summary of what was presented, what was learned, and implications for
future work. Submission: The paper must be submitted to the instructor through the SafeAssign link found in
Module/Week 7. Grading: The paper will be graded based upon the standard rubric of Liberty’s English and Modern
Language Department.
Remember that these are minimal requirements. To achieve a high grade, you must
exceed these requirements. Page 1 of 2 ENGL 333 Typical Problems Encountered in Past Papers: Writing about how to teach a certain grammatical concept (the assignment is to present
and explain grammar concepts through your chosen text, not to tell about how to present
grammar).
Few illustrative examples; there ought to be copious examples, and each should be
explained in detail.
Letting examples “speak for themselves”.
Less than the minimum number of pages (there is no maximum number).
Less than the minimum number of sources (there is no maximum).
Lack of the citing of source(s) of information within the paper.
Sources cited in “Works Cited” that are not mentioned within the paper.
Improper formatting (should be current MLA).
Lack of distinct organization (should have good opening/introduction with background
information that “sets the stage” along with a solid/explanatory body, and a good
integrative/summarizing conclusion).
Choppy/disconnected prose (lacking topic continuity and transition).
Lack of integration of information from sources.
Reliance upon a few sources for the bulk of the paper; this would be evading the primary
purpose, which is to demonstrate one’s ability to integrate information from many
sources.
Little or no actual grammatical focus. The Research Paper is to be submitted through the SafeAssign link by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on
Monday of Module/Week 7. Page 2 of 2
