How to Approach the Visual Analysis Assignment

Excellent photojournalism makes abstract current events personal in a way that few other mediums can. How or why do these images affect viewers? What do they show about individual experiences in specific circumstances? What do they teach us about the human experience through those details? For this assignment, you'll choose an image from a professional (or in the case of National Geographic, excellent amateur) photographer to analyze.

First, choose an image.

  • The image should be from one of the websites below.
  • The image should be of someone (or many people) not a scenery shot.

Reflecting about your identification with the person/people in the photograph is part of the assignment. The other part, examining how aesthetic issues (like composition or color) affect the work's overall quality/viewer effect is served by the fact that these photographs are superior.

The essay should be:

  • 3-4 pages in length (about 750-1000 words)
  • In MLA manuscript format (double-spaced, etc. See Writing Resource for more information)
