one paragraph, reaction to the paragaph below
Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing” freely follows the feelings, experiences and thoughts of the characters. In this quote, Beatrice’s explanation as to why she must remain unmarried is a witty one, she explains it this way on purpose. She is saying that he who has a beard is more than a youth and he that has no beard is less than a man, so ideally there is no perfect match for Beatrice. She is playing with words meant for Benedick.
Benedick has a beard and this means that he cannot be the idealistic lover for Beatrice. We see Benedick shave his beard once he falls in love with Beatrice to show her that he can grow a beard and be a man and more than a youth and he can lose the beard and be less than a man. Sort of on the cusp of manhood which would be the desire for many a “young” woman.
As Beatrice, there are many women dreaming of a perfect man. What many don’t understand or can’t come to terms with, is that there are no perfect men in the world. We are all imperfect and must compromise when it comes to relationships.
