500 words max! PROMPT FOR ESSAY #3, ANNOTATED
Throughout the quarter, we read three original empirical articles that focused on randomized control trials (RCTs) studying the effects of cognitive behavioral therapies for PTSD (cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure),depression (cognitive behavioral prevention program) and borderline personality disorder (dialectical behavioral therapy). RCTs are considered the gold standard of psychotherapy research. In this essay, pick 1-3 design elements that are often employed in RCTs and discuss how these methodological choices strengthen the experimental design and what we can conclude from these studies.  Listed below are some examples [Slide #6]. You are free to use these examples and/or identify your own.  First, explain what the design element is and then describe how it strengthens the study conclusion. Excellent papers will also discuss how the study conclusion would be weakened without the particular study design element/method. You are encouraged to use specifics of the 3 articles to make your case (you don’t have to reference each article though).
