One of the most important components identified was a general assessment of the substance within the article. For example, the research should be about a relevant topic, be well written, and unify the theories used to develop the study and explain results effectively. Another key desirable characteristic identified by Gottfredson was the use of a heuristic approach to writing the article. A heuristic style helps the reader discover something for themselves by guiding them through the research. This can be achieved by providing the appropriate information in the literature review to create a starting point and then presenting the study in a way that pulls together the data and theories to reach a final conclusion that coincides with the study results.  Very good discussion.  Why is this a useful way of writing a research article?  When reading articles myself, I think of this concept as a study that causes me to have an "aha!" moment in which all of the information comes together in a way that allows me to see the relevance of the study in a broader context. According to the article by Gottfredson (1978), peer-reviewers are looking for a specific set of characteristics when evaluating journal articles for publication.
