Touch Apprehension Read Chapter 8, pgs 231-252. Complete the measure below based upon how you feel about touching others and being touched. Please indicate the degree to which each statement applies to you by marking in the blank beside the item: (5) Strongly agree; (4) Agree; (3) Are undecided or neutral; (2) Disagree; (1) Strongly disagree. 1. I don’t mind if I am hugged as a sign of friendship. ____ 2. I enjoy touching others. ____ 3. I seldom put my arms around others. ____ 4. When I see people hugging, it bothers me. ____ 5. People should not be uncomfortable about being touched. ____ 6. I really like being touched by others. ____ 7. I wish I were free to show my emotions by touching others. ____ 8. I do not like touching other people. ____ 9. I Fnd it enjoyable to be touched by others. ____ 10.I dislike having to hug others. ____ 11.Touching others is a very important part of my personality. ____ 12.Being touched by others makes me uncomfortable. ____ Then, score the items as follows: (1) Add up items 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, and 11. (2) Add up items 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, and 12. (3) Subtract the Frst sum from the second sum. This is your “Touch Apprehension” score (higher scores mean more apprehension; a score of zero is at the neutral point; total possible range = -24 to +24). Then, give the scale to 4 students whom you don’t know (just go up to them on campus, say you are doing this for your class and say it’s anonymous). Keep track of whether they are male or female. Then, give it to 2 friends whom you know pretty well and BE±ORE giving it to them write down how you think they will score. Score the scale for all 6 of these people as well as for yourself. ±inally, write up a report on your data (for you plus the 6 other people). Did the scores vary much? Did they correspond to the sex of the person? ±or the friends, did the scores correspond to the way you thought they would respond? Analyze the data any way you think makes sense. Do you think touch apprehension is an important psychological characteristic? How might touch apprehension relate to the meaning and impact of interpersonal touch you read about in Chapter 8?
