initial struggles with children in language acquisition

There might be some initial struggles with children in language acquisition as they are learning more than one language. For instance, children might blend the languages, but I think the benefits far outweigh the costs. I know that working in Los Angeles there are many bilingual families and many years ago parents were under pressure from schools to not speak their native languages at home as it was confusing for a child and they would struggle more in Kindergarten that would be English monolingual. This has changed, but I do know that some parents still feel this pressure. When I work with parents who have a different native tongue than English I often find them almost embarrassed to tell me that they do not speak English at home.

If my goal is to encourage families to be bilingual (which it is) how could I explain this to the parent encouraging them to continue to speak their native tongue at home. Using cognitive language from our readings-what could I say to assist the parent in understanding and encouraging them to have a bilingual household rather than ceasing to speak their native language?
