Discussion Questions:                Answer all questions; post one answer to the Discussion Board.  Respond expansively to the Discussion Board post of one of your classmates.

  • Who is the most interesting character to you in the play?  Why?
  • How does the setting (both the Chicago tenement and the era) influence the plot?
  • Why do you think Hansberry titled the play based on a line in Langston Hughes’ poem Harlem?
  • What is the most interesting dialogue in the play?  Why?

 

Lesson Evaluation:                     This module will be evaluated by a written assignment, a literary analysis essay.  Choose one of the following topics on which to write your analytical essay.  The essay should:

  1. be 2-4 pages in length;
  2. be double-spaced and in 12-point font;
  3. include direct quotations from the play;
  4. include quotations from outside, secondary sources;
  5. put all citations into MLA format;
  6. include a Works Cited page;
  7. avoid grammatical errors and plot summary;
  8. be turned in to the class drop box on time (late work is not accepted).

 

  • Discuss how A Raisin in the Sun might be read as a morality play of the 1960s, pre-Civil Rights era.
  • Examine Hansberry’s use of “the dream” as a literary theme in the play.
  • Compare and contrast Lena Younger and Walter Lee Younger.
  • How does Hansberry explore race issues in the play?
