understand Nichole's behavior

Two days before her high school graduation (and one day before all of her out-of-town relatives arrived) Nichole cut her long hair short you can almost see her scalp. In addition to her shockingly short hair length, she dyed her auburn hair dark black.  As if the haircut was not enough, she also pierced her tongue, which now looks like it is infected.  Her parents worry she won't be able to talk to any of her relatives during her graduation weekend because of the new tongue ring.  What do we know about cognitive development in adolescence that might help us to understand Nichole's behavior?
