Depth and encoding: Let's expand on this concept of the brain-and look further into the concept ofencoding and depth-how we "make memories".Â
What determines what we encode in memory?
1.) Material that engenders emotion
2.) Repetition
3.) What you do with information that is stored and how it is affected by things like-prior knowledge.
More factors that help with encoding in memory is depth and encoding. I've begun to describe encoding above, what do we mean about depth?
Depth of processing: refers to greater degrees of semantic involvement. What this means is thinking about what the word means and how its meaning relates to other words. The example that was used in the past is thinking about a "rose". What comes to mind in thinking about the word rose, does it make you think about romance, cost, they have thorns, they smell nice etc. If you are engaging in this you are deeply processing the word rose.Â
Shallow Processing: refers to thinking about more surface characteristics of the stimulus. An example of how you might shallowly process the word rose is by saying "how many syllabus are in the word rose"?Â
I have described several levels of processing, but let's go beyond this in describing: structural, phonemic, category, and sentence. What kinds of research supported these other levels of depth of encoding? What is most effective? Why do we encode information as we do? How can we use our knowledge of processing and encoding to ensure help us with our memories?
