Human Trafficking and Corruption
One conclusion that I was able to generate from the assigned readings this week is on the fact that corruption has become such a pervasive issue affecting different countries. I was also able to deduce that some countries have set forth laws and policies in order to address this issue (US Department of State, n.d). The international organizations and conventions have also set forth numerous policies in order to address, condemn, and demand action against corruption in government. Despite such actions and laws however, I am aware that corruption is still a pervasive issue (US Department of State, n.d). Issues and gaps in implementation are still being noted in different countries, including the US where bribery and unfair competition are significantly affecting their goals of setting corruption-free goals in their political and economic governance (U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, 2003). While various countries have acknowledged corruption to be a major issue in their territories, they also recognize that the problem has seeped deep into their systems of governance that there is a need to unravel years of accepted practices from the workers in government and from the people themselves to completely eliminate the issue (U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, 2003).Â
Human trafficking, based on the readings is considered not just a local issue, but more of an international or global problem. International organizations and agencies have set forth policies to address the human trafficking issue, but I believe that these policies have not been effective in reducing the number of humans trafficked or in addressing the humanitarian issues faced by these humans (UN Office on Drugs and Crime, 2017). Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the international community has made significant efforts to make more reactive and responsive measures towards those exploiting desperate individuals seeking better lives (UN Office on Drugs and Crime, 2017). There is a dilemma faced by the international community in relation to the plight of those who are trafficked, and this is an issue which needs to be addressed first in order to fully address the human trafficking problem.Â
