One of the widely discussed issues in the US is outsourcing and it's effects on US jobs. As we discussed in previous chapters, firms outsource their manufacturing in order to cut costs. Some examples are Nike and Apple. Nike manufactures in the Philippines and imports finished goods to the United States to be sold. Although Nike has the design centers in the United States and creates high-wage jobs, most of the manufacturing jobs move to Southeast Asia. Similarly, Apple designs the technology in the United States but outsources manufacturing. Apply creates high-paying jobs in the US but outsourcing manufacturing jobs affects low-skilled employment in this country.

Do you think the government should protect these jobs by imposing higher tariffs? Will these jobs ever come back? What is the role of technology in future manufacturing? How can we create more jobs in the US? Please read the following article and comment on jobs, outsourcing, government's role and education in your posts. Feel free to share other resources with your classmates.
