The fictional sci-fi classic “The Cold Equations” tells of a space pilot tasked with taking a life-saving vaccine to a colony where everyone will surely die without it. A young woman, who is desperate to see her brother who is in this colony, stows away on the ship. The computer system detects the additional weight and alerts the pilot that there is not enough fuel to reach the destination. His only option is to reduce the weight on the ship by at least 120 lbs., which is the weight of the woman that stowed away on the ship. He must make a decision. If he allows her to stay, he will not be able to reach the colony to deliver the vaccinations to its residents. If he does not allow her to stay she will die. His decision is unbearable, but not making a decision is just the same as making a decision.
Explain a situation or dilemma where no choice being made was actually choosing the course of action.
