public school systems socialize children.

Dr. John Carl describes “hidden curriculum” as lessons taught in schools that are unrelated to academic learning. It applies to the ways in which the public school systems socialize children.

Jackie is a medical assistant at a pediatrician’s office. She notices two children, a boy and a girl in the waiting area. She overhears their conversation and realizes that the little boy is being a bit bossy towards the little girl. Jackie hears the little boy say to the little girl, “I’m a boy and girls are supposed to do what boys tell them.” Jackie wonders about the experiences that led the little boy to say this to the little girl.

Re-read the text’s explanation of hidden curriculum. Discuss how colleges might use this process of socialization. You can draw on your own experiences.
