influence of pop culture and the media on the development

this week I want us to think about the influence of pop culture and the media on the development of delusional disorder (see p.353 in our book).  Delusional disorder is a condition in which a person has a delusion, no other psychotic symptoms and few changes in overall functioning other than the behaviors immediately surrounding the delusion.  With erotomanic delusional disorder, a personal believes that someone of higher status or a celebrity is in love with them, often seen in celebrity stalkers:  Mark David Chapman and John Lennon, Jack Jordan and Uma Thurman, John Hinkley and Jodie Foster, Robert John Bardo and Rebecca Schaeffer, just to name a few.  Celzic (2008) reported that “experts say celebrity stalkers may seem harmless, but remember Mark David Chapman began as a seemingly innocent stalker of John Lennon, and wound up his killer.”  Do you think tabloids, newspaper articles, entertainment news, celebrities being in the limelight, and even reality television shows increase the risks and maybe even potentially causes individuals to develop erotomanic delusional disorder?   This clip from MSNBC (2008) shows a video from the case of Uma Thurman and mentions other high profile celebrity stalker cases.  What do you think?  Tell us about any other cases you know about.
