Please watch this video showing an elementary school teacher who was presenting a math lesson. Pay attention only to the student who was wearing white T-shirt and blue shorts in the picture to the right. Count the number of times that the girl engaged in an off-task motor behavior.

Off-task motor behaviors are defined as any instance of motor activity that are not directly associated with an assigned academic task. Look for the following behaviors:  

  • Manipulating objects not related to the academic task (e.g., playing with a paper clip, twirling a pencil, folding paper, etc)
  • Physically touching another student when not related to an academic task.
  • Bending or reaching, such as picking up a pencil on the floor
  • Drawing or writing not related to an assigned academic activity
  • Turning around in seat, oriented away from the classroom instruction
  • Fidgeting in seat (i.e., engaging in repetitive motor movements for at least 3 consecutive seconds) while not on task

Very important note. An off-task motor behavior should not be scored if the student is listening to the teacher or is working on the assigned material.
