Efectiveness oF Capital Punishment and Ofender Classi±cation oF Juvenile Sex Ofenders Question 1 - Effectiveness of Capital Punishment Capital punishment is still a controversial issue in the United States. Many states are passing regulations to eliminate the death penalty. In May 2015, the state of Nebraska became the 19 th state to abolish the death penalty. A recent death penalty case has even caused the Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of the death penalty. Additionally, many manufactures are refusing to make the “cocktail” for lethal injections. Some states have resorted to the use of unregulated resources and distributors. What is your view of capital punishment? Do you think that more states will abolish its use? Do you think it is an effective deterrent for committing serious crimes? http://knowledge.sagepub.com.ezproxy.umuc.edu/view/criminology/n71.xml http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/lethal-injection/death-penalty-case-inflames-supreme-court-passions-n383796 Question 2 - Offender Classification of Juvenile Se x Offenders In your readings this week offender classification is discussed and the risk and needs assessments that are utilized for rehabilitative treatment of offenders. In regards to the classification of juveniles, problems exist with finding tools to assess the risk and needs of these offenders due to fewer standardized instruments as opposed to adult offenders. Author  Patricia  Harris   states,   “The  determination  of  which   sex   offenders   should  be  eligible  for  community notification takes place without the benefit of state of the art prediction tools. Similarly, decision making for which sex   offenders   should   be   subjected   to   civil   commitment   resembles   clinical   judgments   from   an   earlier   era”.  Review the following article titled, “Juvenile Sex Offenders: Locked Up for Life? Based on your reading, explain  your views about Mandatory Registration of juvenile sex offenders and Civil Commitments of juvenile offenders.  Use additional search engines and sources to support your opinions.  http://jjie.org/juvenile-sex-offenders-locked-up-for-life/ http://knowledge.sagepub.com.ezproxy.umuc.edu/view/criminology/n90.xml
