This week, we are exploring the physiological processes of sensory perception. Hallucinations (from medications, illicit substances, or psychopathology) are created from sensory perceptions without a stimulus in the material world. A key component of many spiritual experiences are some sensory stimulation that could be viewed as a hallucination. Further, some cultures report hallucination-like experiences without substances during various life events (such as seeing a recently deceased relative). These are not considered hallucinations, but rather culturally appropriate experiences.
