ACA Code of Ethics.

Even if a counselor is licensed, I do not believe it makes him or her competent.  I have worked inthe health care field for just about 10 years and have worked with many doctors,all who are licensed.  I have come across many doctors who although they hold a license, I found that they were not competent at what they were doing. Anyone can study, take a test, and pass a test.  Some better than others, but it does not necessarily mean they are going to be good at what they do.  Per the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics “Counselors practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Whereas multicultural counseling competency is required across all counseling specialties, counselors gain knowledge, personal awareness, sensitivity, dispositions, and skills pertinent to being a culturally competent counselor in working with a diverse client population.” (p.8) Being a counselor in my opinion takes a lot of patience and compassion.  Some may pass the licensing exam with flying colors and have no patience or compassion towards their clients.  It is our duty to make sure we hold true to our responsibilities, which is being licensed and competent in our career.
