How does proper labeling is a good idea to keep people informed where the items they are consuming come from?

How does proper labeling is a good idea to keep people informed where the items they are consuming come from? Would this affect consumption?

This is in reference to this post:

I saw today that the US received its first shipment of Brazilian beef in nearly a decade. This lack of trade was due to concern over the risk of mad cow disease and how an increase in Brazilian beef could have devastating effects on the Amazon.  There is now a call for food products to be labeled with a country of origin label.  I instantly thought of international regulatory regimes and wondered how this concern about the environment could possibly be minimized through an international regulatory regime.  Maybe they could stipulate that the beef come from land already established for agriculture and cattle rather than newly deforested land?  Or maybe they will simply push for a country or origin label so people can know if the beef they are eating is contributing to the deforestation of the amazon rainforest.  NGOs and states alike, I’m sure, may become involved in this regulatory process.
