Chapter 5

Based on Chapter 5 of the textbook and the Brotherly Love video, discuss acts of resistance by African Americans. You might focus on one revolt, or “everyday” acts of resistance. Do you consider this resistance successful? How did whites respond to such acts of resistance/rebellion?

EXAMPLE: As we read last week and saw from the video, the Revolutionary War sparked the interest of freedom in the slaves. The Declaration of Independence provided documented hope that in a country where the belief that all men are created equal, they too can find freedom. With new hope, slaves began to take stands against their owners. They became resistant and would take punishments to prove a point. They would fake illness to avoid daily work and would refuse to eat as a means of being unhealthy. Slaves began to stand up to their owners, in many cases they would fight back physically and violently. Slaves began to plan revolts and rebellions among themselves. Some were discovered and put down before they started and others were carried out with some success.

Whites responded harshly. They shut down rebellions and revolts and swiftly led harsh punishments. They hired doctors to check on the faking of illnesses and would punish and enforce work on those trying to get out of it. Whites in the North took notice of what was happening in the South as tensions rose on the plantations.

I think it would be easy to suggest that there were many times were there was no success seen but as slaves daily made an effort to fight back and maintain hope they instilled a fight in those around them. They built the idea of freedom and equality and the desire to fight for what was rightfully theirs. These act of resistance are what led to planned and organized rebellions that eventually faired successful. If slaves would have just accepted fate and never chased freedom and the hope of life outside of the plantations then who knows where the world would still be. It took great courage and desire to resist and I would say it all contributed to the success of one day being free.
