Normality & Abnormality
Written Assignment
Important parameters: This paper should be 6-7 pages long, including your reference list,
typed and double spaced. Edit until you can be clear, complete, and concise! Use Times New
Roman, size 12, and 1-inch margins. Proper grammar and spelling are expected; the work you
put into editing affects your grade.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you upload the final, complete version of your paper. If
you are worried about accidentally uploading a corrupted, blank, or earlier version of your paper,
you should upload your paper early and then check it.
Late papers will not be accepted. This paper will account for 15% of your course grade. Your task: As you have learned through the semester, conceptions of normality and abnormality
can change dramatically over time. You will hypothesize in this paper about what kinds of
changes are coming in the future.
Your paper should consist of three parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. You must address
each of the three aims or questions described below, or else you will receive a grade of ‘0’ for the
omitted section. You should cite at least three relevant readings from the class readings (and,
optionally, other scholarly sources) using the ASA style guide. These should be readings you
have not yet cited in your papers!
1. Briefly describe some phenomenon or behavior that is currently considered to be normal
that you think will become viewed as abnormal in the future. What are your reasons for this
prediction? Draw on at least two of the three possible explanations (i.e., statistical, cultural,
biological) as you describe the reasons behind your prediction (about 35% of body of paper).
***I will use all three perspectives to assess your reasoning!***
2. Briefly describe some phenomenon or behavior that is currently considered to be
abnormal, but which you think will come to be viewed as normal in the future. What are your
reasons for this prediction? Draw on at least two of the three possible explanations (i.e.,
statistical, cultural, biological) as you describe the reasons behind your prediction (about
35% of body of paper). ***Again, I will use all three perspectives to assess your
reasoning!***
3. For each of the above two phenomena, indicate whether you think the changes you
discuss will be good or bad transformations. Do you think these good or bad consequences
will be universal, or will some particular groups stand to benefit (or suffer) most? Which
groups, and how? (This can be a separate section, or you can break it up to follow each of the
phenomena you describe. Either way, spend about 30% of the body of the paper on this.)
