Discussion 1 - Week 2

Plagiarism

The Course Introduction reveals that plagiarism is not something confined to an academic setting, but that plagiarism is rampant in American society. Even though roughly two thirds of high school students admit to cheating (McCabe & Pavela, 2005), college students are expected to be more careful in crediting all sources and never borrow any work from the internet, a book, a journal, or a colleague registered for a different section of the same course. In this Discussion you will prepare yourself to face and reject the temptations of plagiarism that exist in our everday lives.
To Prepare for this Discussion:

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 2 1-to 2- paragraphs that use the Learning Resources to response to the following questions:

  • What are situations that may result in plagiarism, either intentionally or unintentionally? What strategies exist to help students avoid plagiarism? Which strategies will be most helpful to you in your coursework?
  • Remember to provide a reference list for any source(s) you rely on for this assignment.

Read a selection of your colleague's postings.

Respond by Day 4 to two or more of your colleagues' postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleagues' postings.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
