• What do sociologists mean by the social construction of reality? How has the social construction of reality affected you?

 

• What are the characteristics of bureaucracies? How do these characteristics help organizations get things done in an orderly fashion? How can a bureaucratic organization hinder organizational operation, development, and change? Can you think of ways that you have bypassed a bureaucratic structure to get something done more efficiently? What would happen if everyone followed your lead?

 

• How do conformity and obedience differ? Provide one example of a time when you conformed and one for when you obeyed. Why did you conform? Why did you obey?

 

• Why do we define some acts as deviant? What makes an act deviant? Who determines whether an act is deviant? How do conflict and functional theories explain how an act becomes defined as deviance?

 

• Deviant behavior violates standards and expectations of a group  social norm. Reflect on a time when you violated a widely shared and  understood norm of your society. What was the norm? What was the  violation? What sanctions did your social group place on you for your  behavior?
